You know I got to thinking today, religious leaders have said some REALLY stupid things over the years. I mean REALLY REALLY stupid things. So through the power of the internet and some spare time, I have gathered up some good old quotes from our "leaders" of the Lord. Enjoy.
"If your not a born-again Christian, your a failure as a human being" - Jerry Falwell
"Evolution is a bankrupt speculative philosophy, not a scientific fact. Only a spiritually bankrupt society could ever believe it. ... Only atheists could accept this Satanic theory." -Jimmy Swaggart
"When the temptation to masturbate is strong, yell "Stop!" to those thoughts as loudly as you can in your mind. Then recite a portion of the Bible or sing a hymn." -Mormon Guide to Self-Control
"I would warn Orlando that you're right in the way of some serious hurricanes, and I don't think I'd be waving those flags in God's face if I were you, This is not a message of hate -- this is a message of redemption. But a condition like this will bring about the destruction of your nation. It'll bring about terrorist bombs; it'll bring earthquakes, tornadoes, and possibly a meteor." - Pat Robertson commenting on gay days in Florida
"The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the devil to keep Christians from running their own country" - Jerry Falwell
"Christians, like slaves and soilders, ask no questions" - Jerry Falwell
"I know this is painful for the ladies to hear, but if you get married, you have accepted the headship of a man, your husband. Christ is the head of the household and the husband is the head of the wife, and that's the way it is, period." –Pat Robertson
"AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals" - Jerry Falwell
"God considers this land to be his. You read the Bible and he says 'This is my land,' and for any prime minister of Israel who decides he is going to carve it up and give it away, God says, 'No, this is mine.' ... He was dividing God's land. And I would say, 'Woe unto any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course to appease the E.U., the United Nations, or the United States of America.' God says, 'This land belongs to me. You better leave it alone.'" --Pat Robertson, on why Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had a stroke.
"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability. We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with." –Pat Robertson calling on the assassination of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez
Grown men should not be having sex with prostitutes unless they are married to them. - Jerry Falwell
"I had a student ask me "Could the savior you believe in save Osama bin Laden?" Of course, we know the blood of Jesus Christ can save him, then he must be executed" - Jerry Falwell
And possibly my favorite one of all .......
Throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools, the abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked and when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad...I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who try to secularize America...I point the thing in their face and say you helped this happen."” - Jerry Falwell on why we got attacked on 9-11.
I'm sorry .. I have to quit, I could go on forever. This is only the tip of the iceberg on just a couple of the spiritual leaders out there. Not to mention it's like shooting fish in a barrel.
No RBV today, I think we've heard enough already.
